Oregon Schools Make November 12 Staff Day

Across the state, thousands of Oregon students will have a four-day weekend next week.

Schools across the state are already on Thursday November 11 for Veterans Day. But many schools have changed their calendars to add Friday, November 12 as another day off for students.

Some schools give teachers the day as a grading day. Some school districts, like Portland Public Schools, have made it a staff training day.

“November 12 will provide teachers with a professional development day after much of their time out of class has been consumed by the safe opening requirements during the COVID-19 pandemic,” PPS said in a statement. . declaration announcing the approval of the day off by the school board.

PPS, like other school districts, said staff shortages left little time for program adoption and other planning.

In Lincoln County and others, district officials predict shortages of substitutes that would place a burden on staff at a time when the school is already facing shortages.

“Thinking of how difficult this day is for students in school situations where teachers and other staff are pushed to the limit, there is not sufficient reason to keep November 12 a student day.” , said the Lincoln County Superintendent. Karen Gray in an announcement to staff late last month.

In its statement announcing the change in schedule, officials at the Estacada said they anticipated high levels of absences.

“Our staff and families are already seeing high levels of fatigue as children re-adjust to full-time in-person learning,” the statement said.

Other districts that will not have a school on November 12 include Beaverton, Salem-Keizer, Umatilla, West Linn-Wilsonville, Corvallis, Eugene 4j, McMinnville, Hillsboro, Yamhill-Carlton, Coquille and Greater Albany public schools.

In a a message On its staff well-being and retention website, the Corvallis School District said Nov. 12 was a day for staff and students to “rechargeâ€.

Corvallis said the local Boys and Girls Club will be open on November 12 for families in need of care. In Salem-Keizer, officials say they are working with providers to offer child care that day.

The Oregon Department of Education did not send any communication to school districts about November 12.

Some of the nation’s largest school districts have also announced a No School Day on Nov. 12, including Chicago Public Schools. Authorities have closed schools there for the day to promote vaccinations against COVID-19.

At least one district in Oregon is taking a similar step. The Bethel School District in Lane County will be hosting an immunization clinic for students aged 5 to 11 at Willamette High School on November 12.

Employees of other school districts have taken note. At the Gresham-Barlow School District School Board meeting on Thursday, Gresham-Barlow Education Association president Rhett Hyman told board members that making the day a day for non-students would show their support to everything the staff have done this year.

“If you are looking for something to take off the staff plate, that would be really great,†Hyman said. “I know it’s late notice.”

Several school districts have said they will still meet the state’s teaching time requirements for the year, so there won’t be a need to make up for the day.
