Objections to more downtown housing – Santa Cruz Sentinel

I am grateful for the continued efforts of Stephen Kessler to draw our attention to the specious arguments for creating a multi-storey, multi-use lot on the only parcel of downtown land that still exists and supports a place social gathering for the community!

My objections to the new building are along the lines of his, but I also question the general planning notion that more and more housing can and should be built downtown with little or no transportation needed to residents or users of such a building. Planning services have invented a myth that people will use their bikes to get to work or to get around on foot. This is unrealistic and so far Highway 1 and side streets have become a rush hour parking lot.

I hope the existing library will be restored or rebuilt.
