In response to student requests and to increase trans + and non-binary visibility at Humboldt State University, a new data dashboard will show the gender diversity on campus.

The announcement comes during National Transgender Awareness Week, which begins Monday, November 13 and ends with Trans Day of Remembrance on Saturday, November 20.

The data dashboard was developed in consultation with HSUTransgender, Non-Binary Gender and Gender Nonconformities Task Force, which was formed in October 2020 to address issues important to transgender, non-binary and gender non-conforming people at university.

“It is difficult to value what remains invisible”, explains Loren Cannon, professor of philosophy. In an effort to increase visibility and respect for trans on campus, the Dashboard is a key effort that enables students to self-identify their gender identity and gives academic departments and leaders an ethical means to better understand the trans + representation.

“Data is often seen through the lens of prejudice and imbued with power and privilege,” says Michael Le, director of HIS Institutional research, analyzes and reports. “This dashboard is a first step in dismantling the power and privilege to define gender identity. The intention is to reveal that state definitions are more dynamic than federal definitions, but more rigid than how individuals see themselves.

The campus community is invited to learn more about the dashboard during a virtual unveiling on Tuesday, November 16 at 1 p.m. Register in advance for this meeting using your HSU username via this link.

The dashboard will be available here after the presentation.

The Transgender, Non-Binary Gender and Gender Nonconformities Working Group provides training for staff, faculty and student groups who wish to acquire cultural understanding and skills in trans / GNB practices. inclusion and respect. The working group is also looking for additional members. Contact President Mira Friedman at [email protected] for more information.

For inquiries on the sub-committees, please email Michael Le regarding data collection and reporting, [email protected], or Loren Cannon regarding staff and faculty training, llc33 @ humboldt. edu.
