The Florida A&M School of Journalism and Graphic Communication held a meeting on Friday with the school’s new dean, Mira Lowe.
Maurice Eddington, the provost, announced on August 25 that Lowe would be the new permanent dean, replacing acting dean Bettye Grable. Lowe had been assistant dean at the University of Florida.
The meet and greet event began with opening remarks from Grable, who welcomed the students, faculty and staff, who were on hand to meet Lowe.
“Today is an exciting day and a pivotal moment for SJGC,†said Grable. “We are moving forward with a new permanent dean. “
After Grable’s welcome, Emmanuel Childs, third-year graphics major, and Pam Rentz, third-year journalism major, thanked Lowe for joining SJGC and told him about the exciting things that are happening in each of their. divisions.
Lowe said she was impressed with the program.
“We all know the greatness of FAMU because we hear about it,†Lowe said. “Now I am able to experience greatness myself and I am delighted to be here. “
Lowe said she doesn’t plan on being a distant dean and looks forward to improving the student experience.
“I see us as a school of storytellers,†Lowe said. “We have a story to tell internally and externally and I can’t wait to show how great we are.”
The meeting was attended by students, faculty and staff.
The second part of the event was moved to the gallery room where light refreshments were served and the students casually met and spoke to Lowe.
C’era Pace, a third-year journalism major, said the meeting was a welcome opportunity for everyone to get the new head of SJGC.
“I think it was a great idea to see who was going to take the lead and run the school,†Pace said.
Rentz said she is thrilled that Lowe is leading the SGJC and can’t wait to learn from her.
“Dean Lowe has received many accolades and held many honorable positions,†Rentz said. “Getting the opportunity to learn from your tutelage will be a great experience. “
Dean Lowe is scheduled to officially begin his post on Friday, October 22, a few days before reunion week.
Grable said SJGC is more than ready to get it started.
“Dean Lowe comes into a real FAMILY that is ready to welcome and embrace him with open arms,†said Grable.
