The town of Flat Rock has scheduled a town hall for 4 p.m. on Tuesday, September 14 to discuss issues related to a gas leak discovered on August 30.
The meeting is scheduled to take place on the football field at Flat Rock Community High School, 25600 Seneca. The convocation notice was published Monday on the city’s official website. A note encourages those planning to attend the meeting to check the website again on Tuesday morning for more information.
The source of a gasoline leak, which occurred at Ford Motor Company’s Flat Rock assembly plant, has been plugged, affected sanitary sewers continue to be flushed, and officials say benzene levels were reduced to traces only. However, it is still unclear when residents will be able to return to their homes.
City officials have repeatedly said they are as transparent as possible and regularly communicate updates with residents. However, many residents said they wanted to ask questions directly of Ford officials, as well as local, state and federal officials overseeing the remediation effort.
The city did not specify in its notification which officials will be present to answer questions.
Flat Rock held virtual town halls, due to an effort to keep people safe amid the COVID-19 pandemic, but officials said there had been a demand for an in-person meeting .
The outdoor meeting on the football field will take place, weather permitting.
