NEW LONDON, CT (WFSB) – Virtual learning could be a reality again for some students in the state.

Connecticut College in New London is facing a COVID epidemic and has just reviewed its operation.

As of Wednesday morning, Connecticut College reported 64 students testing positive for COVID and a staff member.

“We are aware that recent cases are linked by groups of friends. And some are also linked by two events; at a local bar and social gathering, ”said Mary Day, of the Ledge Light Health District.

Many students said they hope distance learning is a thing of the past. However, this is already a reality again.

The college said it was operating at “alert level 3”. This means that the students are still on campus but working remotely.

He also said athletics is canceled for the time being and sports buildings are closed.

Gatherings are not allowed inside. Outside, they are only allowed in groups of three.

Only critical faculty members are permitted on campus. Others are invited to work remotely.

The school said it is also asking all students to get tested for COVID twice a week.

Channel 3 has contacted to find out how many students have been vaccinated.

The college made a statement Wednesday morning.

In our continued commitment to protecting community health, the college has decided to move from Alert Level 1-Green to Alert Level 3-Orange. It does so as a result of an increase in positive cases that have emerged among students. The College was able to identify these positive cases through our rigorous bi-weekly student testing program.

We have temporarily taken a number of measures including switching to all distance learning, requiring all students to stay on campus, requiring masks at all times indoors and outdoors, and other security measures. These new protocols will last approximately 7-10 days as we continue to closely monitor the health situation on campus. We have also informed the New London public health authorities of this information. We will keep the community informed of any changes to these plans.
