The Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, said environmental sustainability is one of the most pressing issues in the world today.
Sanwo-Olu who spoke at the World Environment Day 2022 Finale held at Adeyemi Bero Auditorium, Secretariat, Alausa, Lagos said the Earth is facing a triple planetary emergency, namely climate change, loss of biodiversity and environmental pollution.
Represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Office of Environmental Services, Dr. Omolaji Gaji, the Governor said the impact of the challenges has negatively made the achievements of the Sustainable Development Goals less successful.
According to a statement signed by the Public Affairs Director of the Ministry of Environment and Water Resources, Kunle Adeshina, on Sunday, the governor added that it is urgent for everyone to live sustainably with nature for the benefit of humanity.
“With nature in emergency mode, the #OnlyOneEarth campaign for World Environment Day 2022, wants us to celebrate the planet through collective environmental action,” he said.
The Governor said that regardless of economic status, residents should be part of the development agenda of Lagos State by getting involved, adding that it is an opportunity for all to reflect on the nature that offers provisioning, shelter and restoration of ecosystems.
